The second night of UEFA Champions League fixtures took place on Wednesday night with yet another round of intriguing results.
In Group F, Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb shocked Arsenal with a 2-1 home result to kick off their campaign in fine fashion.
Zoran Mamic's side made it 42 matches without defeat thanks to a 24th-minute own-goal from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and a 58th-minute header from Junior Fernandes, after Olivier Giroud's sending off, and prior to Theo Walcott's late consolation goal for the Gunners.
In Greece, Olympiacos struggled to hold off German giants Bayern Munich who netted twice at the death to flatter their eventual 3-0 scoreline. A brace from Thomas Muller, the first a cracker from range, did most of the damage for Pepe Guardiola's men.
Bayern's Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen got their Group E campaign started by eventually producing a 4-1 home triumph over Belarusian side BATE Borisov. Hasan Calhanoglu scored twice while Admir Mehmedi and summer signing Javier Hernandez also got in on the act after Borisov has equalised through Nemanja Milunovic.
In the other Group G fixture, AS Roma managed to hold reigning European champions Barcelona to a 1-1 draw at the Olympic Stadium. Luis Suarez edged the Catalan giants ahead with a back post header in the 21st minute before Alessandro Florenzi scored one of the most remarkable goals ever seen in the Champions League.
The Roma right-back advanced into his side's attacking half and upon seeing Marc-Andre ter Stegen off his line, produced a perfectly-placed lobbed effort from the right touchline from 40 yards.
Chelsea put their domestic woes behind them to return to form with a comfortable 4-0 home win over Israel's Maccabi Tel Aviv with goals from Willian, Oscar, Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas while Dynamo Kyiv and FC Porto drew 2-2 in Ukraine with Vincent Aboubakar landing a double for the visiting Portuguese.
And in Group H, Zenit Saint Petersburg scored an impressive 3-2 away win at Valencia courtesy of a brace from Hulk - the second an absolute rocket from 25 yards - as newcomers KAA Gent drew 1-1 with French club Lyon in Belgium.
The next round of group stage matches in Europe's premier club competition take place on September 29 and 30.
